Nantou南投weekend trip

On this rare day when I’m home at 6.30pm, I shall reward my loyal readers with latest pictures of myself.

We were at Nantou over the weekend. It was a great dorm-organised trip. On Saturday, we gathered at 7am for the 4-hour long journey by chartered coach.

We took the cable car for a bird’s eye view of the forest, sang ktv on the coach until we were tired, bbq-ed in the dark, and the next day, trekked through Sitou forest led by a 60+ years old volunteer who kept urging us to ‘walk faster!’, and we went to pray at a popular temple of a wealth god. Most importantly, the company was good and our group leader took care of our every whim and possible issue.

Back to studies for the rest of the week. The Singaporeans group will be attending an outdoor concert this Sunday featuring Mayday, Jay Chou among others, and we might venture to Hsinchu this Saturday.

Living on my own involves doing every errand myself. I can’t believe I spent 1.5 hours doing the homework housework since I came home at 9.30pm. I did the laundry, mopped the floor while waiting for the laundry to be out of the washing machine and folded or hanged up my clothes. Sadly, the dryer did not dry my clothes completely again. I counted: 7 dried articles out of  a total of about 40 clothings. So I had to do the usual task of sorting the clothes out and hanging most on 10 clothes hangers and leaving the almost-dried clothes on my bed for now.

I’m still so irritated by the laundry that I scratched my outer ear so hard it bled.

Today I’m finally able to settle my modules in Taida. The English Division in NTU rejected my request to match Thursday’s ‘Literary Criticism’ so I have to take tomorrow’s ‘European Literature’. No more 3-day weekend, but it’s alright. If necessary, I can still travel immediately after class ends at 12 on Fridays. :D Oh yes, this also means I need to get 2 more volumes of Norton Anthology of Western Literature. Heartache.

In other news, I also received an e-mail that my FYP advisor is Prof. Sim! I’m so glad that my wish has been granted and another thing is settled. Soon I’ll have to research on my Sing. Lit research as well as e-mail him.

To end, I’m glad to know the bunch of Singaporeans studying in Taida. They are great company the past two gatherings, including the one to celebrate mid-autumn festival over steamboat.

It’s late; looking forward to European Literature tomorrow. Goodnight!

Today is typhoon day.

As Typhoon Fanapi raged through Taipei today, I’m stuck in my room eating 7-11 Bentos. I had pork rice this afternooon and it smelled horrendous when i opened it. I gave up after a few bites and decided to brave the strong wind and intermittent rain to the 7-11 next block. It is just 1-min away from the safety of my dorm and the rain was not heavy. I got bentos for dinner and possibly Monday’s breakfast before the wind starts sweeping people off their feet. I bought beef rice and chicken rice. I just ate the beef rice, which was barely palatable. So I had milk with cereal. This simple soul food tasted so much better and filled my stomach.

The made-in-taiwan umbrella I bought here has since been proven to withstand strong wind and still work. The moment I opened the door, the gush of wind was fantastic. It immediately messed up my hair and my umbrella was upturned too. Next time I won’t need an umbrella when there’s a typhoon.

This is the best weather to air-dry my clothes and for free. The dryer in my dorm which i pay NT10 or 50 sg cents to use doesn’t dry my clothes completely! It is so very irritating. Out of 25 articles, only 5 were completely dried. The rest, i had to hang them in the cupboard and leave the cupboard open. It was not the first time. If other dryers are also this inefficient, it’s time to complain!

And another inefficiency was the internet connection in my room which took 4 days, numerous trips to the lobby reception and as numerous calls to get up. I also waited until 1am for the student network technician (who did not turn up). Several kind-hearted souls including my volunteer’s friend in the same dorm, the dorm’s counsellor, and a neighbour opposite. On the 3rd night, I felt so down beacuse there were so many things I could not do without the internet such as checking my modules allocation and talking to my loved ones. Eventually, I had to insist that I needed help right now and not wait for another day or night. The receptionist called the computer network office and the problem was solved almost instantly.

【 台北縣 】明天照常上班、照常上課. No more excitement. Back to school tomorrow!

I’m in Taipei!

School finally starts today. I attended German language class today and my jaws literally dropped. The German professor speaks perfect Mandarin. Every word was enunciated perfectly well. The entire class was conducted in purely Mandarin with the occasional interjections of English words. I was embarrassed that I had to ask him to explain what certain chinese words that he spouted so naturally meant.

Also attended Asian American literature class which is being taught by an American. It is similar in standard and academic demand as what I would encounter in Singapore NTU. The professor hinted that we are expected to read every reading or we should drop the module right now.

The best thing about this module is there is no mid-term exam nor final exam, only one term paper. I don’t have to buy the books because I only need to read selected parts of novels which will all be available as a course package for less than NT200, which is less than $10.

American Literature tomorrow taught by a Taiwanese and in English. Hope it turns out fine and there is not a final exam too.

Taiwan is good so far. Feeling healthy and enjoying the convenience of food and clothes every corner I turn. My room is fully furnished for the next 4 months. Main thing I have to do over the next week is check out every class I’m interested in and do more shopping for clothes! Did not bring enough clothes, I don’t want to wash my clothes every 3 days.

Going to Wufenpu with my new-found friend who shares similar interest as me. We love Mayday’s songs! Hopefully we’ll get to see them here in Taiwan. She’s also as nice and i’m sure we will get along well.

Yay! Last day of work!

I’m happy to be able to start packing my luggage. I’m happy to be able to laze at home from Tuesday. At the same time, I’m sure I will be sad when I leave the office tomorrow.

Anyway, I’m excited it’s the last day of work!

sixteen weeks

p.s. i’ll remember the past sixteen weeks of fun.

Given a choice, there is nothing I wish to change during my internship stint except to smile even more brightly to everyone. I’ll make up for it in the next 3 working days with mega-watt smiles.

Little helping hand from Taiwan

As if a student volunteer is not enough, I now have a “little helper” from Taida as well! She call herself my “little helper”, aka “xiao bang shou”.

On Friday night, I was pleasantly surprised to receive Tina’s email that she lives in the dorm and will help me with dorm matter when i move in. Now I have Tina to show me where to get the daily necessities and even where to make friends!

I feel so fortunate to know that even before I get there, I already have 3 Taiwanese friends who will take care of me. Undeniably, I’m most looking forward to meeting Ginger who will introduce me to the whole Taiwanese sl community.

1 more month to go!

60 days visa

I took half-day off and went down to PSA Building to apply for the taiwan visa. Another half-day off to collect the visa. Done!
